Yoga - Origin And Background


 

Yoga is a science that has been around for centuries. It includes different disciplines for the mind and body. The practice originated in India over 2500 years and continues to be effective at promoting health and wellnessbeing for anyone who practices it. Yoga is the Sanskrit word Yuja. The word yoga means to unite, culminate or concur. The culmination is the union of the mind and the body, or of Jiva (universal spirit) and Shiva. This is also a culmination between Purush and Prakriti, (Yin and Yang).

Yoga is a term that has an extremely broad meaning. Yoga is divided into several systems or schools. Dnyanayoga, Bhaktiyoga, Karmayoga, Rajayoga and Hathayoga are all different types of Yoga. These schools aren't necessarily that different. Like threads of the cloth, they are entangled together. Yoga is a powerful tool for self-improvement, spiritual awakening and has been used by thousands of people over the years. These systems all have the same goal, but their methods of attaining it differ. The term Yoga is most commonly associated with Hathayoga, which is the final of these systems. The term Yoga has the same meaning in this article. The term Yoga is used in a wider sense when it comes the Philosophy of Yoga at the end of the article.

Asanas and Pranayama

Asana: Asana is the art of acquiring and holding a posture for as long as your body will allow. When done correctly according to these rules, Asana can have enormous psychological and physical benefits. Asana is considered the first step towards Pranayama. Asana helps to balance opposites in both the mind and body. Also, it helps get rid of the inertia. Asana's benefits are increased with regular maintenance. Asana must be steady, stable and enjoyable.
